The management of digital rights or DRM is a term that encompasses several techniques that allow the owner of the rights or distributor of a digital content to control how the material can be used by users in any type of electronic device. DRM techniques are based on encryption, which allows content owners to control the way in which it can be accessed by different users, including the issue of licenses and decryption on the client device.

These tools that serve to control the dissemination of digital content are computer programs and / or physical devices that operate protecting the copyright and other rights of the owner thereof (security or regulation and access control) in order to authorize under certain premises the use of such content. For the owner of these digital contents, the immediate advantage of their application is the possibility of interacting and maintaining continuous control over their work.

The main elements of a DRM system are: the digital content itself, the source of said content, the destination thereof, the license that the destination has on said content and the trust model between source and destination. The source is the one that provides the encrypted digital content and the associated license (which can be integrated with the content itself), and the destination, which uses them. Both source and destination can be both a user and a digital device.
